Layer: Aboriginal Communities and Town Reserves (ID: 23)

Name: Aboriginal Communities and Town Reserves

Display Field: COMMON_NAME

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPoint

Description: The dataset shows the recorded locations of currently occupied Aboriginal communities within the state of WA. It consists of point data (geographical coordinates) with limited attributes attached. Attributes include a key (COMM_ID); common name (COMMON_NAME). The dataset is a view constructed from a spatial set of all record locations of the communities, showing only the current recorded position. The dataset is not definitive and is the result of continually capturing and updating information about the communities from a variety of sources including administration data and survey data. Additional attributes are obtainable from the Aboriginal Information Management System; population, alternative names of communities, infrastructure and underpinning land tenure, the business entity that manages the community and so forth. For the purposes of the dataset an Aboriginal community is defined as being within a geographic location bounded by physical or cadastral (legal) boundaries, and inhabited or intended to be inhabited predominantly (i.e. 50% or more of people) by Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples for at least nine months of the year or more, with housing or infrastructure that is managed on a community basis either by them or an Indigenous Housing Organisation. Also note that the spatial set is limited only to Aboriginal Communities and does not include land held by the Aboriginal Lands Trust or freehold and other land held by Aboriginal organisations, businesses or individuals (unless it is also an Aboriginal community). The dataset may not completely list all occupied communities in Western Australia, as there may be communities that have not been visited or identified.
